Narrowboats are a floating holiday home so it’s possible to take all sorts of pets on the canals.
Canal boat holidays are great for dogs, with plenty of towpath walks, dog-friendly canalside pubs and other dogs to meet along the way. Well behaved pets are welcome on almost all of our self-drive boats. As well as dogs, our hire boat operators have accommodated many other kinds of pets aboard their floating holiday homes, including rabbits, hamsters, caged birds, goldfish and tortoises.
If you are bringing your dog, you might prefer a narrowboat with an open cruiser-stern so there is more room on deck for everyone to enjoy the ever-changing view. We suggest you bring your dog’s own bed so it quickly feels at home. A doggy life-jacket is also a good idea – choose one with a wide belly-strap and easy-to-grab handle, just in case your dog decides to go swimming!

A small charge may be applicable and we ask our customers to keep their pets off our bedding and seating areas.
